File:The Negro trail blazers of California (microform) - a compilation of records from the California archives in the Bancroft Library at the University of California, in Berkeley; and from the diaries, ().jpg. From Wikimedia Commons, the free media repository. Document A, Document B, Document C, and Document D were recorded in El Dorado County, California, in the 's. These documents were copied and published by Delilah Beasley in her book Negro Trail Blazers of California. Students should analyze these documents in the following two-step process.

Delilah Leontium Beasley (), an American writer, became the first person to document the history of California’s black pioneers with her landmark book The Negro Trail-Blazers of California, self-published years ago. Beasley was a pioneer in other ways as well. She held the distinction of being one of the first African American women to. As a journalist, she traveled around the state for eight years and spent her own money to produce and self-publish "The Negro Trail-Blazers of California” (), which one hundred years later is still the most thorough history of California's Black pioneers. (A copy is currently on view as part of The Huntington's centennial exhibit.).

Delilah Beasley's book, The Negro Trail Blazers of California, cites a family bible which states Biddy's birth date (15 August ). However, indirect sources including censuses, and Biddy's death record, infer a wide variety of different birth years.   So wrote Delilah L. Beasley, the first African-American woman to land a regular writing gig with a major metropolitan daily newspaper, in her book The Negro Trail Blazers of California. Beasley, quite an interesting figure herself, traveled the length and breadth of the state doing research for the book.
